About the Higher Education Development Center

Center philosophy

The Center for Teaching and Learning, Teikyo University (CTL) promotes education that realizes the university's School Philosophy, Educational Philosophy of "“One’s way”," and Educational Guidelines of "Practical learning, International perspectives, and Open mindedness." The Center's objectives are to investigate and improve Professor systems in higher education, including Professor methods, curriculum, and educational evaluation, as well as to promote promote faculty development (hereinafter referred to as "FD").

promote faculty development (FD) Definition
At our university, FD is a collective term for systematic, ongoing review and improvement efforts based on faculty-staff School Philosophy and student Educational Guidelines, aimed at improving individual classes and Educational Philosophy, as well as the development of organizations and educational environments to promote these, all of which are carried out with the aim of realizing the educational goals of faculties, departments, and graduate schools, in accordance with the university's founding spirit and unique educational philosophy and guidelines.

Chairman and President Yoshihito Okinaga

At our university, we have been working to improve our classes through School Philosophy Educational Philosophy by committees in faculties, departments, and graduate schools at Hachioji Campus, which is primarily home to liberal arts faculties, so that students can develop “One’s way”, which is an educational philosophy based on the university's founding spirit.
In April 2011, we established this center on our Hachioji Campus with the aim of further enhancing FD activities at our university. Since the 2008 revision of the University Establishment Standards made FD mandatory, each university has been undertaking various FD initiatives, but these activities must reflect the university's diploma policy (degree awarding policy) and the type of students the university aims to nurture and send out into society. With this in mind, the center aims to promote improvements to teaching and learning as a whole, based on the principles of "faculty-staff collaboration" and "student participation."

The current trend in university reform began with the establishment of the University Establishment Standards in 1991, and the Central Council for Education report and other trends have shifted from teaching to learning, university management in accordance with the three policies, and quality assurance of learning, with the 2022 revision of the Establishment Standards for quality assurance adding the need for "constant review of educational and research activities based on the results of inspections and evaluations as well as the results of accreditation evaluations." The pace of this reform is remarkable, and it is no exaggeration to say that the teaching skills and knowledge required in the field are far removed from the university education one received, and in many cases, one is required to use methods to achieve one's goals that are different from the educational methods one has received.
The Higher Education Development Center introduces students to the latest methods and knowledge, from the fundamentals required in the workplace, while also providing them with workshops to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to put these knowledge to practical use. Established in April 2011 as an organization to promote faculty development activities on Hachioji Campus, the Center currently comprises four divisions: the Higher Education Research Division, the Educational Methods Research Support Office, the Educational IR Promotion Office, and the Writing and Expression Education Division. The Center also participates in the Teikyo University Faculty Development Network, fulfilling its role as an organization supporting the implementation of quality assurance in education at the university. While we will continue to promote faculty development activities university-wide, we hope that students will actively utilize the Center to achieve the educational goals of each faculty, department, and graduate school, including the university's Educational Philosophy of “One’s way”."

History of establishment

It was born with the aim of further enhancing FD activities and improving overall education.

Up until now, our university has mainly focused on individual FD activities by committees in faculties, departments, and graduate schools. However, in 2008, due to the revision of the University Establishment Standards, which made FD mandatory, universities were required to make even greater efforts toward FD. In addition, due to changes in the surrounding environment, the academic abilities of students attending universities are diversifying, and there is an increasing demand for the diversification of ways of thinking among university faculty members. Against this backdrop, the Center was established in 2011 to enhance FD activities and improve the teaching as a whole.
Since its establishment, it has been energetically engaged in activities such as the introduction of the SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) project, in which teachers work to improve classes as research activities, regular holding of FD forums and FD seminars, and implementation of various trainings aimed at professional development of faculty and staff. I am continuing my activities.

Teikyo University Center for Teaching and Learning FD Forum

Dates: June 18, July 12, September 10, November 5, 2021, January 7, January 28, 2022
In response to the introduction of online classes at Hachioji Campus in the spring of 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a total of six seminars were planned and held to support faculty in online classes. A wide range of topics were covered, including lesson design and grading for online classes.

One of the pillars of our center's work is providing training services for our university's faculty. Our goal is to improve the quality of student learning and realize the university's Educational Philosophy of "learning “One’s way”." To achieve this, it is essential not only for students to take an active role in their own learning, but also for the faculty members who support and lead them to improve and develop their teaching skills.
In order to respond to the increasingly diverse and complex roles of university faculty and the demands of society, we have established three main faculty training courses to be implemented throughout the year from 2020: the New Faculty Training Program, the Brush-up Program, and the Teaching Portfolio Training. The training is structured based on the "Five Areas of Teaching Profession" advocated by the Japan Association for the Development of Higher Education (JAED).

[3 courses]
■ New Teacher Training Program
In principle, the program is aimed at faculty members who have been with the university for less than five years, and aims to improve the teaching skills necessary for class management, such as creating syllabi and grading.
■ Brush-up Program
Aiming to continuously refine Professor methods, the program is structured to be more practical and specific, including how to teach writing and how to effectively use ICT.
■Teaching Portfolio Training
The program is aimed at newly appointed teachers with teaching experience or more, and aims to have them write their own teaching portfolios through reflection on their own teaching activities and mentoring with faculty members from the Center.

[5 areas of educational function]

  • Area 1 Understanding the university community
  • Area 2 Class design (goal setting, implementation plan, grade evaluation)
  • Area 3 Educational Practice
  • Area 4 Grade evaluation, feedback
  • Area 5 Continuous education development and self-improvement / career development

SoTL stands for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and refers to "efforts to improve Professor and learning processes through academic inquiry into classroom practice by faculty members." Our center introduced the SoTL project in 2017 as part of its faculty development efforts, and is supporting faculty research into their lessons.

SCOT (Students Consulting on Teaching) is a program that collects and provides information on classroom activities to desired teachers. It is conducted by students interested in teaching and learning with the aim of improving the quality of university education and providing in-class activities from the student's perspective. To become an SCOT, you will be certified as a formal SCOT after undergoing FD training, such as what a syllabus is, so that we can provide useful information to faculty members. This university is the first university in Japan to work on SCOT, and has been active since 2012.
