Message from the Dean

Resolving conflicts through legal avenues is an essential requirement in a modern society with diversified values. In order to go about doing that, legal mindsets are required along with, of course, legal knowledge. What is the legal mindset is required of those dealing with the law? It refers to the ability to ultimately replace the relationship between people with a legal relationship, or more specifically, to have the constant conflicts arising in society boil down to what legal rights and obligations are involved, make judgements on the relative merits of cases, and to derive appropriate and reasonable solutions. This obviously requires a wealth of legal knowledge and a deep level of discernment when it comes to people. At the Graduate School of Law, we believe that it is our mission to train specialized professionals and researchers who have acquired such legal knowledge and legal mindsets, as well as deep insight into and an understanding when it comes to people. Given this, we invite forerunners with abundant sets of knowledge and experience from the worlds of academia, law, government, and business to provide instruction at our school. While contemplating the societal roles and influence of each individual legal precedent with a focus on case method-based learning while utilizing legal precedents as teaching material, we systematically provide a wide range of education and guidance starting with basic knowledge of the law and go right up to highly specialized knowledge, while also turning our attention to morality, reason, and sentiment, which are elements often thought to be unrelated to the law. In doing all of this, we aim to develop talent able to contribute to society. In particular, we want our master's program to serve as a vibrant place acting as a bridge between society and people who are able to use the previously mentioned elements to hit the ground running in the field. We are waiting to be inspired by the enrollment of students who want to contribute to society through a broad range of work relating to the law, including those aiming to become researchers, legal professionals, civil servants or tax accountants, those who are interested in corporate legal affairs, or other such individuals.
