On June 13, 2026 (Saturday), at the 32nd Annual Meeting South Korea Society for Medical Mycology held at the Konkuk University Hospital Auditorium (South Korea), Professor Koichi Makimura, Deputy Director of the Institute for Medical Mycology, Teikyo University, participated as an invited speaker and delivered a special lecture.
This academic conference was held as an international academic meeting focusing on the latest trends in diagnosis and treatment in medical mycology, as well as antifungal drug resistance, under the theme of "Bridging Diagnostics and Therapeutics in the Era of Antifungal Resistance." Professor Makimura, who described a new species of Candida auris in 2009, has been engaged in the detection, identification, and molecular epidemiological research of this fungus for many years. Candida auris is an emerging pathogenic fungus that is attracting international attention from the perspectives of healthcare-associated infections, antifungal drug resistance, and hospital outbreaks. In this lecture, titled "Antifungal Resistance in Japan: Candida auris and Other Emerging Pathogens in a One Health Context," I spoke about the epidemiological characteristics of Candida auris in Japan and South Korea, as well as international trends in antifungal resistance, from a One Health perspective.
This presentation highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between medical mycology research and infectious disease control in the Asian region, based on the accumulated research on Candida auris in Japan. The institute will continue to contribute to medical mycology research and infectious disease control both domestically and internationally through research on the classification, diagnosis, drug resistance, and epidemiology of pathogenic fungi.
