Hachioji CampusA research group led by Associate Professor Yamada of the Center for Medical Mycology has proposed a new antifungal therapy for treating athlete's foot.

On Wednesday, April 3, 2023, Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology Associate Professor Tsuyoshi Yamada, in an international collaboration with Shinya Ohata, Musashino University Faculty of Pharma-Science Department of Pharma-Science Associate Professor and his department Senior Assistant Professor Masaki Ishii, Department of Biology, University of Lausanne, Switzerland School of Medicine and Emeritus Professor Michel Monod, University Hospital, Switzerland, identified TrPtk2, a protein involved in the natural resistance of terbinafine, a drug for athlete's foot, to the stomach acid They have discovered that the gastric acid suppressant omeprazole can enhance the action of terbinafine when used in combination with terbinafine.
The results of this research are expected to lead to the discovery of new therapeutic agents for the treatment of athlete's foot, which has been increasingly reported to be terbinafine-resistant in recent years.
