Itabashi CampusBreakthrough Discovery: New Yeast Species Found in Koala Habitats

Teikyo University's Graduate School of Medicine, Department of Medical Mycology, led by Dr. Yu Guo, along with Assistant Professor Muhammad Mahadi Aleshafei and Associate Center Director Shoichi Makimura from the Mycology Research Center, have embarked on a vital mission to protect koalas from Cryptococcus infection, commonly known as Koala Disease. Their research involves a thorough examination of koala nasal passages and enclosures in zoos across Japan. During their investigations, the team unearthed a previously unknown yeast species from the koala enclosures. In a nod to its colony's distinctive hue (a faint pinkish-yellow), they christened it "Begerowomyces aurantius." The Mycology Research Center is committed to advancing the field of medical mycology through valuable contributions to collaborative research and its practical application in society. This discovery marks a significant stride in safeguarding these beloved creatures and underscores the center's dedication to the betterment of scientific knowledge.
