On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Teikyo University Faculty of Law invited Shigeki Matsui, a well-known leading expert on constitutional law at the University of British Columbia (Canada) Peter Allard Law School Professor, to give a special lecture in class.
The lecture, entitled "Why Same-Sex Marriage Is Not Allowed," covered various aspects of the question of whether the denial of same-sex marriage violates the Constitution, including what marriage is, the provisions for marriage in the Japanese Constitution, the situation in Canada and other countries regarding same-sex marriage, and court cases challenging the constitutionality of the denial of same-sex marriage in Japan, He explained from various aspects. In particular, the court cases in Japan were explained in detail with public opinion and precedents, and the students seemed to listen intently to the explanation. During the Q&A session, students asked many questions about the responses of foreign countries that have recognized same-sex marriages and about the ongoing Japanese court cases challenging the constitutionality of denial of same-sex marriages. Matsui Professor answered each question based on his wealth of knowledge, providing a valuable opportunity for the students to deepen their understanding.
