Hachioji CampusInspiring Lecture by World Vision Japan Sheds Light on NGO Work and SDGs

In a bid to enrich their understanding of international cooperation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Teikyo University organized a captivating lecture on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. The event featured Mr. Migiwa Nakajima, the Director of the Strategic Planning Office at NGO World Vision Japan, who shared valuable insights with students at Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus. This special lecture was part of "International Cooperation Theory II," a course skillfully taught by Professor Atsushi Nishioka from the Faculty of Language Studies, Department of Global Japanese Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies. The goal was simple: to provide a practical and immersive perspective on international cooperation, particularly within the framework of the United Nations and the SDGs.

During the lecture, students had the opportunity to delve into the significance and contributions of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the realm of international cooperation, with a focus on the remarkable work carried out by World Vision Japan. Remarkably, many students who participated in the session expressed their newfound interest in NGOs. They shared comments like, "I had never heard of NGOs before, but I became interested in NGOs after learning more about their activities," and "I am interested in NGOs myself." Additionally, several students eagerly voiced their desire to collaborate with NGOs, and some even contemplated a future career path in this field. The lecture left a lasting impact on students who were deeply moved by the efforts to improve sanitation and eradicate open defecation.

At Teikyo University, the concept of "global citizenship" is at the forefront of our educational mission. We aim to inspire as many individuals as possible to contribute to the betterment of the world. To achieve this, our curriculum thoughtfully integrates international volunteer theory and other pertinent subjects. Moving forward, we are committed to expanding educational opportunities that will further broaden students' understanding of NGOs and extend the horizons of cooperation. Teikyo University remains dedicated to nurturing the global leaders of tomorrow, equipping them with the knowledge and perspective they need to tackle the world's most pressing challenges.
