Teikyo University Expands "UNHCR Refugee Higher Education Program" to Graduate Studies

On Thursday, March 23, 2023, Teikyo University formalized a new agreement to expand the "UNHCR Refugee Higher Education Program," a special scholarship initiative tailored for refugees. The university originally entered into an agreement regarding this program with the UNHCR Japan Office and the UNHCR Association of Japan in December 2019, and has been accepting individuals with refugee backgrounds since April 2021. In this latest development, the university extended the program's scope beyond undergraduate studies to include graduate programs within the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, as well as the Management Department of the Graduate School of Economics. The agreement was signed at Teikyo University's Kasumigaseki Campus, in the presence of Teikyo University Chairman Yoshihito Okinaga, UNHCR Japan Office Representative Rei Ito, and UNHCR Association of Japan Secretary-General Masayuki Kawai.

Under this agreement, up to four refugees will have the opportunity to pursue studies in both undergraduate and graduate programs at Teikyo University each year. In the midst of an increasingly pressing global refugee crisis, Teikyo University is committed to collaborating with domestic and international partners to continue providing higher education opportunities for as many refugees as possible.

The "UNHCR Refugee Higher Education Program (RHEP)" is a collaborative effort between universities partnering with the UNHCR Japan Office and the UNHCR Association of Japan, offering higher education opportunities through their respective scholarship programs to individuals recognized as refugees or those with similar status, for whom pursuing higher education due to economic constraints or other reasons is challenging. This initiative, unique to Japan, has garnered international attention and currently includes 14 partner universities, including Teikyo University.
