Teikyo University Kendo Club held a special class for their kindergarten students at the Teikyo University Martial Arts Center in Hachioji City, Tokyo on February 17, 2023. This marks the first kendo class held by the club in three years, a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The students planned the content of the class with the goal of conveying the appeal and fun of kendo to young children.
The class involved small groups of less than 10 students, with each group receiving instruction on basic movements such as greetings, footwork, and swinging. The event concluded with a game-like competition, where children broke paper balloons attached to their heads, accompanied by loud cheering from both parents and children from middle and elementary grades. The kendo students were invigorated by the smiles on the young participants' faces and appreciated the challenge of teaching kendo to beginners, which provided an opportunity for them to revisit the basics. The kendo class was conducted safely thanks to the cooperation of kindergarten teachers, parents, and other stakeholders. Going forward, Teikyo University is committed to creating more valuable opportunities for students and kindergarteners to interact with each other.
