Teikyo University and Mexico-Japan Institute Sign Exchange Agreement to Promote Cultural Diversity and Bilateral Relations

On Monday, December 26, 2022, a signing ceremony was held at the headquarters of Teikyo University. President Yoshihito Okinaga of Teikyo University and President Takashi Kono and Acting Director Hanako Iwamura of the Liceo Mexicano Japonés (Mexico-Japan Institute) came together to sign an exchange agreement that aims to promote cultural diversity and strengthen the bilateral relationship between Japan and Mexico.
A Mexico Course and a Japan Course are available through the Mexico-Japan Institute in Mexico City. The Mexico Course emphasizes learning the Japanese language and encourages students to continue their studies in Japan after graduation. Teikyo University, on the other hand, offers a Spanish course in the Department of Language Studies within the Faculty of Language Studies and is one of the few universities in Japan to train students with specialized Spanish language skills. It also offers a study abroad program at universities in Mexico.
As part of the exchange agreement, arrangements were also made for the continued acceptance of international students from the institute into the newly established Department of Language Studies within the Faculty of Language Studies, which began in April 2022. The Department of Global Japanese Studies aims to provide students with the ability to communicate with the world about Japan and tackle the challenges of a globalized society through the study of English and Japanese as communication tools. In the third and fourth years, students learn and explore issues facing a global society and Japanese culture in the world through specialized classes and exercises, as well as language study, and acquire the ability to communicate their findings. To foster collaborative learning, the classes are designed to mix Japanese and international students. Graduates of the institute are expected to contribute to the cultural diversity of the department. With the signing of this agreement, Teikyo University will keep promoting interactions with the Mexico-Japan Institute in order to support the continued growth of the two countries' bilateral ties. The signing ceremony was attended by Ms. Nerea Castillo, a recent graduate of the institute and a first-year student in the Faculty of Language Studies' Department of Global Japanese Studies. With this agreement, Japan and Mexico will take a big step toward increasing mutual understanding and cooperation.
