We have discovered a quick and easy method for detecting and identifying Candida auris strains using a new medium.

The research group of Dr. Shun Tamura, Assistant Professor Areshafunim Hammad Mahdi, and Deputy Head of Center / Professor Koichi Makimura of the Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology has collaborated with Kanto Chemical Co., Ltd. to collaborate with Kanto Chemical Co., Ltd. "Candida Plus" medium can not only detect Candida auris in common pathogenic Candida, but also has low pathogenic domestic strain (Clade II) and multidrug resistance and high prevalence overseas. We have discovered that pathogenic outbreak strains (Clade I, III and IV) can be identified. The results of this research were published in the specialized paper Microbiology and Immunology published in June 2022.

Candida auris is the world's first pandemic fungus that was named and described by Professor Makimura in 2009. In order to prepare for the influx of Candida auris outbreak strains due to the resumption of international human exchange, this medium that can detect and identify this bacterium is expected to be a clinically indispensable tool.
The Medical and Fungal Research Center will continue to deepen cooperation with external institutions and encourage them to contribute to medical mycology and promote social implementation based on better joint research.
