| profile | Graduated from Teikyo University Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in March 2001. Joined a foreign-owned pharmaceutical company and worked as a Medical Representative (MR) on organ transplant projects. Obtained an MBA (Master of Business Administration) from Graduate School in 2013, and after working at a medical consulting firm, founded Necuino Co., Ltd. in 2016. |
Nekuino Co., Ltd. was founded in 2016 amidst the deregulation of telemedicine. Since its inception, the company has been thoroughly committed to connecting healthcare and consumers through the use of ICT and transforming communication. Its goal is to implement innovations that solve the challenges of the healthcare industry into society. Kenichi Ishii, a graduate of the Faculty of Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, founded the company with like-minded individuals with a background in healthcare and continues to lead the front lines. His experience as a medical representative (MR), a minority position at the time, became the starting point for his awareness of problems in the healthcare field, leading him to start a company to solve those problems. The company has now grown to more than 70 employees. Its main business, the online medical consultation platform service "Smaruna," has accumulated more than 1.3 million app downloads. As a healthcare tech startup that provides products and services that do not yet exist in the world, the company's strength lies in "focusing on the structural challenges in the healthcare field and the gap between consumers and healthcare," says his predecessor. We delve into his journey.
Many of my classmates became pharmacists, but I didn't want to follow the same path as everyone else. So, even though it was a tough job market at the time, I decided to take a job as a medical representative (MR) at a pharmaceutical company. Even now, my medical expertise forms the foundation of my career, and there are many times when I feel glad that I obtained the national qualification to call myself a pharmacist. Last year, I visited Silicon Valley and Stanford University. I learned firsthand about the latest examples of startups and innovation, and listened to people who are running businesses there. Gaining these kinds of experiences at a young age will surely be valuable for the future. I hope you will put yourself in different environments and spend time on challenges that you can only take on during your student years.
After working in primary care as a medical representative (MR), I supported an organ transplant project. There, I witnessed firsthand the dedication of healthcare professionals who dedicate their lives to saving patients. At the same time, I became concerned that the realities of the medical field were not adequately communicated to the public. Against this backdrop, I conducted research in Graduate School on the theme of "Why are Japanese doctors so busy?" A major factor was the time spent interacting with patients. I realized that one of the contributing factors was the limited opportunities for patients to access information about their medical care, and I strongly felt the need for a new communication system. That's why I worked tirelessly to launch a telemedicine service.
In a contrarian spirit, we founded our company not in Tokyo, where startups are concentrated, but in Osaka, a city known for its many pharmaceutical companies. Initially, we envisioned a subscription service for private medical care aimed at elderly patients. However, as we began to think about solving health issues for the working generation, and looking at the healthcare system as a whole, we realized that "women's health" was a topic where there was no bridge between healthcare professionals and consumers. Women's unique concerns and problems are areas where misunderstandings easily arise due to differences in assumptions and the amount of information available between healthcare professionals and consumers. Please pay attention to our efforts to solve these communication problems with technology. We will continue to provide products and services that do not yet exist in the world in order to solve the challenges of various healthcare settings. We want to grow into a company that will be remembered by future generations as having dramatically changed Japanese healthcare.
Founded in June 2016, the company entered the femtech market, which uses technology to solve health issues specific to women. It plans and operates internet-based telemedicine services, develops and manages systems, and provides consulting services to medical institutions. Its main business is operating "Smaruna," an online medical consultation platform service specializing in gynecology.
I visited my alma mater for the first time in a while. Seniors walk around the campus, which is a mix of old and new buildings.
