Educational Purposes

In accordance with the School Philosophy, the Faculty of Liberal Arts fosters a method of knowledge that can be applied to the practice of various professions while also returning to the origins of learning. Through our educational guidelines: International perspectives and Open mindedness, we aim to cultivate individuals with a professional and broad knowledge of the liberal arts.

Three policies of the Faculty of Liberal Arts

The Faculty of Liberal Arts aims to nurture individuals with expertise and a broad range of liberal arts skills that can be applied to the practice of various professions while returning to the origins of learning. The degree is awarded to those who have acquired the following abilities and have completed the prescribed credits.

  1. Acquire basic knowledge in a broad and diverse range of humanities fields, and possess the ability to identify and solve problems with a rich sense of humanity and ethics.
  2. Acquire the specialized knowledge and broad-based education required by each department and accurately respond to various issues facing modern society from a multifaceted perspective.
  3. Be able to contribute to the development of society with an international perspective, study the necessary knowledge and skills with an unbiased approach, and possess a wealth of creativity and expressive ability

In order to acquire the competencies required for the conferral of a degree, the Faculty of Liberal Arts shall organize its curriculum in accordance with the following policies:

  1. Students must take basic subjects in the first year to study specialized topics. The curriculum is structured to allow students to build up their studies step by step as they progress through the grades.
  2. Small-group education courses such as Life Design, Basic Practice, and seminars will be established to develop presentation and communication skills, as well as to foster an approach to dealing with diverse and complex issues.
  3. Organize practical subjects that can be used in society emphasizing the Educational Guidelines of International perspectives and Open mindedness.

What students will learn in the Faculty of Liberal Arts is to question the world and oneself from different perspectives rooted in the essence of human nature. Therefore, in acquiring fundamental knowledge and skills in Humanities, students are expected to have a broad outlook, deep insight, and the ability to think critically and value their awareness of issues. For this reason, it is extremely important to study a wide range of basic subjects at high school and other institutions in a proactive manner. 
We are looking for candidates who have the following abilities and qualities acquired through studies at high schools:

  1. The student has the fundamental academic background necessary to acquire specialized knowledge and broad education.
  2. The student has the willingness to ask questions and think about the things that make others feel prosperous and happy.
  3. The student can consider issues in a multifaceted and logical manner, including discussions with others.
  4. The student has a keen interest in international events and a desire to contribute to the development of their respective societies through their rich imagination and expressive abilities.

Three policies of the Department of Japanese Cultures

In accordance with the objectives of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the Department of Japanese Cultures aims to nurture individuals who, through multilayered, multifaceted, and systematic study of Japanese culture, will acquire proficiency in the Japanese language, have an international outlook, and contribute to the inheritance and development of diverse cultural traditions.

The Department of Japanese Culture aims to cultivate individuals who, through multilayered, multifaceted, and systematic study of Japanese culture, will acquire proficiency in the Japanese language, have an international outlook, and contribute to the inheritance and development of diverse cultural traditions. The degree is awarded to those who have acquired the following abilities and have completed the prescribed credits.

  1. Be able to explain the fundamental knowledge about different aspects of Japanese culture.
  2. Acquire a solid proficiency in the Japanese language.
  3. Acquire professional knowledge to contribute to the inheritance and development of cultural traditions.
  4. Apply specialized knowledge of Japanese culture in a multitude of fields.

In order to acquire the competencies required for the conferral of a degree, the Department of Japanese Cultures shall organize its curriculum in accordance with the following policies:

  1. Life Design Seminar (1st year), Basic Japanese Culture Seminar (2nd year), and the English Course are compulsory subjects to develop presentation, expression, and communication skills through small-group education.
  2. Students will acquire fundamental knowledge of Japanese culture by taking the compulsory courses Introduction to Japanese Culture, Japanese Communication, Introduction to Traditional Culture, and Studies in Modern Japanese Culture.
  3. Students will gain extensive and diverse knowledge of Japanese culture through elective courses such as Studies in Religion and Culture, Modern Thought, Studies in Traditional Culture, Studies in the History of Japanese Literature, History of the Japanese Language, and others.
  4. Through the elective and compulsory seminars of Modern Japanese Culture and Modern Literature, Japanese Culture, Comparative Culture, Traditional Culture, and others, students in the 3rd year will be able to independently and actively pursue research according to their interests and concerns and learn to move on to the elective Graduation Thesis Seminar in 4th year.

Three policies of the Department of History

In accordance with the objectives of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the Department of History aims to nurture individuals with the ability to examine the past from a historical and logical perspective, and to impartially understand and judge the dynamics of the modern world and the position of Japan in the world.

The Department of History aims to nurture individuals who can examine the past from a historical and logical perspective, and who can impartially understand and judge the movements of the modern world and the position of Japan in the world. The degree is awarded to those who have acquired the following abilities and have completed the prescribed credits.

  1. Based on the methodologies that history has cultivated over the years, it is possible to objectively and systematically grasp various historical events in the past.
  2. Be able to read various materials based on historical theory and judge their historical value.
  3. Be able to logically examine the subject area and period based on professional knowledge of history.
  4. Be able to examine contemporary social trends historically and logically, and make big-picture judgments based on these considerations.

In order to acquire the competencies required for the conferral of a degree, the Department of History shall organize its curriculum in accordance with the following policies:

  1. The department offers six courses in Japanese History, Oriental History, Western History, Archaeology, Geography, and History of Art and Cultural Heritage, so that students can effectively complete their education in the field of their choice. During the 1st year, students will acquire fundamental knowledge of history by taking the compulsory course Introduction to Geography I & II and selecting eight elective courses from the following: Introduction to Japanese History I & II, Introduction to Oriental History I & II, Introduction to Western History I & II, Introduction to Archaeology I & II, and Introduction to History of Art and Cultural Heritage I & II. 
  2. By taking the compulsory small-group courses Life Design Seminar (1st year) and Seminar in Humanities (2nd year), and the compulsory course Introduction to History (2nd year), students will learn the objectives of university study and the various methods of study of History.
  3. From the 2nd year, students will select one course from the above six courses based on their interests and deepen their professional knowledge by taking special lecture courses, history reading courses, and elective courses accordingly, and by taking small-group seminar courses from the 3rd year.
  4. In the 4th year, every student is required to submit a graduation thesis. However, students can obtain the credits necessary for graduation by selecting alternative graduation thesis courses.

In line with the objectives of the Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Liberal Arts of Department of Sociology aims to develop the ability to solve various social issues from a broad perspective by studying the diverse human relationships of modern society based on accurate knowledge of sociological theories and methods. The purpose is to develop human resources with

The Department of Sociology aims to nurture individuals who can explore the nature of human beings and society, and who can identify problems and play an active role in a wide range of specialized areas of sociology. The degree is awarded to those who have acquired the following abilities and have completed the prescribed credits.

  1. Be able to explain basic knowledge of sociology.
  2. Identify social problems and conceptualize society.
  3. Conduct empirical investigations based on theoretical thinking.
  4. Be able to develop logical arguments based on the results of research and studies.
  5. Understand oneself as a member of society and have a tolerant attitude toward others.

In order to acquire the competencies required for the conferral of a degree, the Department of Sociology shall organize its curriculum in accordance with the following policies:

  1. During the first year of study, students are required to take a small number of introductory university education courses and lecture courses to acquire basic knowledge of sociology. In addition, several fundamental and specialized elective courses are offered to meet the interests of individual students.
  2. From the 2nd year, many specialized subjects corresponding to a wide range of fields will be available. Compulsory lecture courses to learn the basics of sociological thinking and compulsory courses to cultivate a research mindset will be held. In addition, compulsory seminar courses will be arranged to foster the basic skills needed to study in subsequently specialized seminars. Also, practical training courses will be provided to enable students to acquire the ability to link knowledge and practice.
  3. Compulsory seminar courses will be offered from the third year onward to develop the acquisition of professional knowledge, the ability to identify problems and think logically, and the ability to make presentations. The results of their research can be summarized in a graduation thesis.
  4. The department has developed a set of specialized courses as elective compulsory courses to guarantee the research and statistical processing skills that will be demanded in various industries in the future. Social Research Training I, II is positioned as the culmination of this field of knowledge. By obtaining these credits, students can apply for and obtain the qualification as a " Certified Social Research Specialist" accredited by the Japanese Association for Social Research (JASR).

Three policies of the Department of Psychology

In accordance with the objectives of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the Department of Psychology aims to nurture individuals who can acquire accurate knowledge and abundant practical skills in both the fundamental and applied areas of psychology and contribute to the creation of rich human relations and society.

The Department of Psychology aims to educate individuals who can contribute to the scientific understanding of the functions of the mind and support mental health issues to realize a world in which people can lead happy, fulfilling, and creative lives, while exploring various problems facing modern society. The degree is awarded to those who have acquired the following abilities and have completed the prescribed credits.

  1. Acquire and explain the knowledge of psychology and various sciences.
  2. Be able to collect and analyze data using methods from psychology.
  3. Be able to think and discuss flexibly and scientifically using psychology.
  4. Propose and review practical solutions and coping strategies for mental health problems.
  5. Respect diverse people's standpoints and collaborate with those around to sincerely face psychological issues and lead a life of one's own.

In order to acquire the competencies required for the conferral of a degree, the Department of Psychology shall organize its curriculum in accordance with the following policies:

  1. The Department of Applied Psychology offers a wide range of specialized faculty members in various fields of psychology, providing a thorough basic education through abundant lecture courses so that students can learn both Fundamental Psychology and Applied Psychology, including Clinical Psychology, in a well-balanced manner. Furthermore, all grades will participate in seminars or their equivalent in small-group classes. This curriculum provides practical education to discover and settle problems, formulate hypotheses, and solve them based on the evidence through experimentation, practical training, and seminars.
  2. In the 1st and 2nd years, students will take compulsory courses such as Life Design Seminar, Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology, Statistical Methods in Psychology, and Fundamental Psychology Seminar, which form the basis for university studies and the foundations of statistical analysis and research methods in Psychology. In the 2nd year, students will learn the methods of experimentation, investigation, testing, observation, and interviewing, as well as techniques on how to analyze the results and write reports through the Fundamental Psychology Practical Training and the Psychological Test Measuring Practice. From the 3rd year onward, acquisition of such fundamental knowledge of psychology and understanding of research methods is essential for students to conduct an independent and systematic study and research according to their interests. The department requires students to earn credits in the compulsory first-year courses and part of the second-year practical training courses to advance to the third-year courses.
  3. From the 3rd year, students will select one of the four areas of study Fundamental Psychology, Social Psychology, Practical Development, and Clinical Practice) according to their interests and deepen their knowledge in each area according to their respective course models. In the Psychological Research Seminar I & II in the 3rd year, students are given practical training opportunities for their graduation research by setting their questions, developing their research plans, and collecting data using appropriate psychological research methods. During the 4th year, students will continue to work on the Psychology Research Seminar III & IV and Graduation Thesis, integrating their acquired professional knowledge and skills over the four years of study. At the same time, students who aim to acquire qualifications to take the Certified Psychologist Examination will also be supported.
