The Hachioji City Summer Children's Science Workshop was held atHachioji Campus

On Friday, July 31, 2026, the "Summer Children's Science Workshop" was held at Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus. This event is part of the community service activities that Teikyo University's Institute for Medical Mycology has been conducting since 1997 at the request of the Hachioji City Board of Education in cooperation with the Hachioji City Elementary School Science Education Center, and this year marks the 29th time the workshop has been held, and the 30th year of the program, excluding interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The workshop is held with the aim of providing local elementary school students with an opportunity to cultivate their interest in science through experiments and observations, as well as to let them know about the activities of Teikyo University and the Institute for Medical Mycology.

On the day of the event, 68 sixth-grade students from Hachioji Municipal Elementary School participated in a workshop themed "The Blueprint of Life: What are Genes (DNA)?". Under the supervision of Professor Koichi Makimura, Deputy Director of the Institute for Medical Mycology, Teikyo University, lectures were given by Senior Assistant Professor Ichiro Sato and Atsushi Miyashita Senior Assistant Professor the same institute. After learning about the structure of DNA, the children, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Aleshafni Muhammad Mahdi of the institute, along with other institute staff and volunteer students, attempted an experiment to extract DNA from pufferfish milt. The extracted DNA was stored in small vials using droppers, and the children took home the results they had obtained with their own hands. Through this valuable experience of actually observing invisible genes, it was an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the mechanisms of life. During the experiment, the children gasped in surprise when white, thread-like DNA appeared, and they were seen working on the experiment with serious expressions. Teikyo University will continue its efforts to convey the appeal of science to local children and nurture their interest in learning.
