Chairman and President Okinaga and others visited Copperbelt University in the Republic of Zambia to exchange opinions and tour the facilities.

May 13 (Wed) – 20 (Wed), 2026, Teikyo University Chairman ・ President Yoshihito Okinaga, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Professor Hideki Yamamoto, Faculty of Education Senior Assistant Professor Yukiko Tateyama, Graduate School of Public Health Professor Yoshinori Nakata, Graduate School of Education Senior Assistant Professor Takuya Yamada visited the Republic of Zambia, where they visited our partner institution, the University of the Copperbelt, as well as the Embassy of Japan in Zambia, the JICA Zambia Office, and local medical institutions.The purpose of this visit was to exchange views and tour facilities with the aim of further developing educational and research exchanges.

First, at Copperbelt University, we met with President Nyambe and other university officials to review the achievements of our past exchanges and to discuss the promotion of student and faculty exchanges and joint research. Furthermore, the university is preparing to establish new faculties of Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, occupational therapy and physical Faculty of Law, and Graduate School of public health. We discussed how our university's long-standing expertise in pharmacy education, rehabilitation education, and public health education could be utilized to support these new educational programs and to develop joint curricula. We also exchanged views on "Sustainable Mining," a key policy issue in Zambia in recent years. While Copperbelt Province boasts one of Africa's leading copper mining regions, it also faces challenges related to environmental pollution, occupational health, and the health of local residents associated with mining development. We discussed the possibility of joint research that could contribute to sustainable resource development and the development of local communities, leveraging the research achievements and knowledge our university has accumulated in the fields of public health, environmental health, and occupational health. Following the discussions, we toured the university's educational facilities and interacted with local faculty and students.
Furthermore, we visited the Community Learning Center (CLC), which is run primarily by local residents in the Chawama district of Lusaka, the capital of the Republic of Zambia, as well as two community hospitals and health organizations built by the Japanese government in Copperbelt Province, deepening our understanding of the current state and challenges of medical care and public health in Zambia.
Finally, through an exchange of views with Mr. Akiteru Mikami, Ambassador of Japan to Zambia, and Ms. Tomoko Ono, Director of the JICA Zambia Office, we discussed the possibilities of international cooperation and human resource development based on inter-university exchanges.

Going forward, Teikyo University will continue to promote student exchanges and joint research, as well as further develop its international exchange system.

We paid a courtesy visit to Copperbelt University in the Republic of Zambia to strengthen collaboration on health care and environmental issues.
