Itabashi CampusVisits Copperbelt University, Republic of Zambia to Strengthen Collaboration on Healthcare and Environmental Issues

From Sunday, April 27th to Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, Professor Hideki Yamamoto of Teikyo University's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Senior Assistant Professor Yukiko Tateyama of the same faculty, and Professor Kei Asayama of School of Medicine visited the Republic of Zambia in southern Africa, together with Mr. Kiichi Oyasu, Director of the Education Cooperation Department of the Asia-Pacific Cultural Center for UNESCO. The purpose of this visit was to hold a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Copperbelt University and to exchange opinions on future exchanges and collaborations between the universities.
During their stay, the group visited the Kitwe and Ndola campuses of Copperbelt University, where they interacted with local faculty and staff, including President Nyambe and Vice President Hangombe, and exchanged views on the possibility of collaboration in the fields of education and research. They also visited the site of the copper mine wastewater spill that occurred in Kitwe in April, and discussed the medium- to long-term health impacts and the possibility of future joint research from the perspective of "sustainable mining." In addition, as an opportunity to build a foundation for future collaboration, they visited the Embassy of Japan in Zambia and the JICA Zambia Office, as well as the University of Zambia and a local Community Based Office (CBO), and actively exchanged views with local researchers and local residents, deepening their knowledge of Zambia's health challenges and the current state of efforts to address them.

Through this visit, we were able to grasp the current state of health care and environmental sanitation in Zambia, and also to obtain important suggestions for promoting future academic exchange and joint research. We will continue to strengthen our network with the government, private sector, and universities in the Republic of Zambia, aiming to further develop research activities and international exchange.
