The Uchiyama Seminar from Department of Sport and Medical Science participated in volunteer support for the sports day at Tama City Suwa Junior High School (Hachioji Campus).

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, 16 students from the seminar of Yumi Uchiyama, Senior Assistant Professor Faculty of Medical Technology Department of Sport and Medical Science, Teikyo University, participated in volunteer activities to support the sports day at Tama Municipal Suwa Junior High School (Tama City, Tokyo). This activity is in its second year and aims to support local educational activities while also providing students aspiring to become health and physical education teachers, school nurses, civil servants, or work in sports education with practical experience in school event management and safety control.

In preparation for this activity, the students conducted research and fieldwork on the characteristics of the school district. Furthermore, based on reflections and challenges from the previous year, they discussed how to interact with students, parents, and community members, as well as the roles expected of students in Department of Sport and Medical Science. They proceeded with preparations while sharing the mission of "a safe and secure sports day" and "trustworthy support."

On the day of the event, the experienced fourth-year students led the third-year students, providing comprehensive support from early morning, including setting up tents, preparing drinks, handling registration, guiding students to the bicycle parking area, patrolling the school grounds, spraying heatstroke prevention measures and assisting with first aid, and cleaning up after the sports day. In particular, regarding heatstroke prevention, they anticipated the students' movements and proactively provided water and sprayed water on the track, and actively sprayed mist on students after the competitions, demonstrating on-site safety management skills that cannot be learned in the classroom alone. A student aiming to become a teacher commented, "Even though the students were tired, they listened attentively and actively participated in the cleanup, which showed the cumulative effect of the teachers' daily guidance." A parent from the PTA also commented, "I was able to concentrate on the sports day and see all aspects of my child's last sports day as a third-year student."

Through this activity, the students learned the importance of face-to-face, trustworthy relationships with the local community and how school events are supported by many people, including faculty and staff. Furthermore, gaining insight into the perspectives of students and parents provided valuable experience that will be relevant to their future career paths. Teikyo University will continue to create opportunities for practical learning in collaboration with the community, aiming for student growth and contributions to the local society.
