On Sunday, June 21, 2026, the first study session of the Radiation Education Forum 2026 and the 8th Educational Seminar of the Japan Radiochemistry Society were held at Tokyo Jikei University School of Medicine (Minato-ku, Tokyo). Yuka Takeuchi (3rd year, Faculty of Medical Technology) and Maya Sato (3rd year, Faculty of Medical Technology) gave invited lectures under the guidance of Professor Hiroki Otani of the Department of Department of Radiological Technology.
The Radiation Education Forum holds study sessions to deepen understanding of radiation, covering everything from basic information to topics designed to pique interest in radiation. This time, I was asked to convey the importance of innovative education from a university student's perspective, and I gave a lecture entitled "Creating Radiation Education Materials Using the VAK Model and Proactive Implementation: Expectations for a Relative Understanding of Risks and Benefits." In the lecture, I introduced and demonstrated how radiation education materials using the VAK model (visual, auditory, and tactile) can be used to teach radiation to junior high school students, enabling students with disabilities to learn as well. The lecture was well-received for its enjoyable learning experience and clarity.
Through this seminar, one student from our university commented, "It was a very valuable experience to have the opportunity to give a presentation at the Radiation Educational Materials Forum. Presenting the award-winning work deepened my understanding, and listening to the presentations of other speakers broadened my perspective and understanding of radiation. Also, being able to give a presentation in front of so many people was an experience that will contribute to my personal growth. I would like to utilize this experience in my future studies and activities."

[Lecture Title] "Creating and Actively Implementing Radiation Education Materials Using the VAK Model: Expectations for a Relative Understanding of Risks and Benefits"

We developed an interactive teaching material for junior high school students with the aim of reducing excessive anxiety about radiation. Its key feature is that it allows students to intuitively understand the risks and benefits by comparing medical exposure with everyday exposure. To represent radiation levels by weight, we put marbles inside a box. For visual learning, the difference in radiation levels can be seen at a glance by placing the box on a balance scale, and for auditory learning, the difference in radiation levels can be understood by the sound produced when the box is shaken. For tactile learning, students can feel the radiation level by holding the box with both hands and experiencing its weight.
