Atsushi Miyashita, Senior Assistant Professor at the Institute of Medical Mycology, Teikyo University, received an Excellence Award at the 5th Japan Medical Association Rising Star Retreat.

At the 5th Japan Medical Association Rising Star Retreat, held on May 28th (Thursday) and 29th (Friday), 2026, at the Piazza Awami Shiga Prefectural Citizens' Exchange Center (Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture), Dr. Atsushi Miyashita, Senior Assistant Professor the Institute of Medical Mycology, Teikyo University, received an Excellence Award.

This retreat, organized by the Japan Federation of Medical Societies, was a program for young researchers and was held under the theme of "A First Step Towards the Nobel Prize - Young Researchers Pioneering Basic Medicine." A total of 62 people participated, including young researchers belonging to the Japan Federation of Medical Societies' Basic Medicine, Clinical Internal Medicine, and Clinical Surgery divisions, as well as planning committee members and invited speakers. Research presentations and lively discussions were held across disciplines. Senior Assistant Professor Miyashita presented on "Basic Research on Infectious Diseases Using a Silkworm Model," and his research results, which connect basic research on infectious diseases, including mycoses, with drug discovery research based on a fungal infection model using silkworms, were highly evaluated, leading to this award.

The silkworm model is an experimental system that allows for the handling of a large number of individuals as a preliminary step to experiments using mammals. It can be used to analyze the interaction between pathogens and hosts, evaluate potential treatments for infectious diseases, and is also expected to be used for applications such as automating survival assessments. This award recognizes the significance of the mycosis research using the silkworm model being conducted at the institute, and its potential for future development in the field of basic medicine. We will continue to promote research that contributes to the understanding of infectious diseases, including medical mycosis, and the development of treatments.
