Faculty and researchers from Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology provided technical guidance on fungi as part of a joint research project with the Okinawa Churashima Foundation.Hachioji Campus

From Tuesday, January 13th to Sunday, January 18th, 2026, Professor Rui Kano and researcher Miki Omura Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology provided technical guidance on fungi at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium based on a joint research agreement between the university and the Okinawa Churashima Foundation.

Okinawa is located in a tropical region, and fungal infections in marine animals and wild birds are a challenge. This technical training session provided practical training to the staff of the aquarium's animal health management office on methods for isolating and identifying pathogenic fungi that infect marine animals and birds. After explaining how to collect and identify pathogenic fungi, the training included actually collecting samples from a dolphin's blowhole and confirming fungal isolation using an endoscope. Furthermore, aquarium staff identified the fungi obtained through culture by morphological observation under the guidance of the Center, deepening their understanding by comparing the samples with specimens.

Our university and the Okinawa Churashima Foundation will continue to work together to protect animals kept at aquariums and wild animals through joint research. The Medical Mycology Research Center will continue to contribute to society through research and educational activities.
