On Friday, November 7, 2025, students from the seminar of Yumiko Uchiyama, Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Sports Medicine, Faculty of Medical Technology Department of Sport and Medical Science, Teikyo University, conducted a health education visit titled "Everyone's Friend, Medicine Man" for the children (middle and senior classes) at the Yokohama City-approved nursery school, "Bless Tsunashima Nursery School."
This health education program was conducted by Senior Assistant Professor Uchiyama with the support of the 2022 Incubation Grant, and also served as an opportunity to consider practical methods for research into how to help children take their medicine in a positive manner.
We listened to children who dislike taking medicine and empathized with their feelings. We explained how medicine works in the body, and in a child-friendly hero show, we showed a "Medicine Man" fighting viruses and bacteria inside the body. We then explained the role of pharmacists as "everyone's allies who teach people how to make medicine easier to take." The children shared many stories about their experiences and impressions of taking medicine, as well as why they dislike taking medicine. This research and practice aims to help children understand the role of medicine in the body and to develop health literacy by learning about pharmacists, who teach them about medicine. We aim to encourage children to take a positive approach to health promotion by devising ways to communicate in a way that stimulates their interest.
