On Thursday, October 23, 2025, the seminars of Nobuyuki Ohashi, Associate Professor in the Department of Faculty of Medical Technology Department of Sport and Medical Science Teikyo University, and Yumiko Uchiyama, Senior Assistant Professor in the same department, jointly held a "Fun Sports Recreation" event for second-grade students at Kitasuwa Elementary School in Tama City. The Kitasuwa Elementary School Parents and Teachers Association, where Uchiyama's seminar volunteers, requested a "recreational activity that allows children to have fun while getting active to their heart's content," leading to the decision to hold a child-participation sports recreational activity. The program, which incorporates the framework of Uchiyama's seminar's previous activities at kindergartens and elementary schools, combined multiple recreational activities designed by Ohashi's seminar, who specializes in recreational activities, with adaptations for lower elementary school students. Both seminars rehearsed the program multiple times. In addition, a video letter for the children was created in advance to create an exciting atmosphere.
On the day, the "fun sports recreation" combined the characteristics of both seminars, with members of Ohashi's seminar introducing the activity and leading the way to draw the children's interest, while members of Uchiyama's seminar explained the rules from the children's perspective, and provided risk management to prevent injuries and accidents. Parents also participated in the recreation, and surveys of parents revealed comments such as, "My children continued to enjoy singing songs even after they got home," and "Through recreation, I was able to naturally experience the joy of moving my body." Surveys of the children showed the recreation's effect of promoting communication, which is its purpose, with comments such as, "I was able to talk a lot with university students and friends." The second-year homeroom teachers also provided a lot of advice for the future, making it a very educational experience.
We will thoroughly reflect on this experience and continue to work together with the local community and the university to hold events that allow children to have fun and get active.
