At the 19th Japan Society for Clinical Laboratory Education Academic Conference, held on Thursday, August 21st and Friday, August 22nd, 2025, at Okayama University's Shikata Campus (Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture), Teikyo University students Kirari Kato (3rd year, Faculty of Medical Technology) and Koya Kabashima (4th year, Faculty of Medical Technology) received the Outstanding Presentation Award.
The Society is made up of faculty and students from universities, junior colleges, vocational schools, and technical colleges across the country that train clinical laboratory technician, and its purpose is to contribute to the health and welfare of the nation through the continuous development of clinical testing in Japan. This year's conference was held under the theme of "Lighting the future of clinical testing - a place for young people to take on challenges."
Kato is conducting research under Professor Suzuki Koichi of the Department of Department of Clinical Laboratory Science Faculty of Medical Technology at our university. He gave a presentation titled "Elucidation of the transcriptional regulation mechanism of the luminal iodide transporter SLC26A7 in the thyroid follicular epithelium by the thyroid transcription factor TTF-1." He identified SLC26A7 as a new target gene of TTF-1, which is important for regulating the expression of thyroid function genes, and reported that transcriptional regulation occurs through TTF-1 binding.
Kabashima is conducting research under the supervision of Takahiro Kameda, Senior Assistant Professor in the same department, and gave a presentation titled "Study on the effects of indole acetic acid on AST and ALT activity measurements." In AST and ALT activity measurements, he conducted tests using pyridoxal phosphate (PALP) and reported on the analytical results of indole acetic acid, an indole compound, on AST and ALT activity measurements.
The content of these presentations was highly praised, and out of a total of 58 student presentations submitted from many universities, eight were selected for the Outstanding Presentation Award, of which two from our university were selected, leading to this award.
We look forward to seeing great things from these two in the future.
