Starting Monday, November 18, 2024, Teikyo University will be selling "BASICS CitraCare Citral Shampoo (shampoo for dogs used in veterinary clinics)," which utilizes the invention for which a patent application is pending: "Composition for preventing or treating Malassezia skin diseases and method for preventing or treating Malassezia skin diseases in animals (Patent Application No. 2024-133762)."
The invention was discovered by a research team led by Professor Rui Kano of Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology and Nobuo Murayama, a veterinarian specializing in canine and feline Dermatology at Animal Dermatology Ltd. (Hirano, Koto-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as "Animal Dermatology"). The natural ingredient citral has been shown to have the effect of preventing canine Malassezia dermatitis. * We discovered that citral, a natural ingredient, is effective in preventing and treating canine Malassezia dermatitis, a fungus that causes the condition, and we have utilized this natural ingredient in a medical composition and a method for treating and preventing canine Malassezia dermatitis. A patent application for this invention has been filed by our university and the Department of Veterinary Dermatology.
In addition, our university and QIX Co., Ltd. (Morino, Machida City, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as "QIX") signed an exclusive license agreement on Friday, August 9, 2024, and QIX has developed and sold a dog shampoo using this invention. The product has a refreshing scent of citral (lemongrass) and contains citral ingredients to keep the skin of sebum-rich dogs healthy, or can be used as a control shampoo for dogs that regularly use medicated shampoos.
This product will be sold to animal hospitals across the country, and it is expected that it will provide support to veterinarians and dog owners.
Teikyo University will continue to promote research activities that contribute to society and social implementation through industry-academia collaboration.
