On Sunday, August 25, 2024, the award ceremony for the 29th All-Japan High School and University Calligraphy Exhibition (sponsored by the Japan Calligraphy Institute and the Yomiuri Shimbun), which determines the grand prize winner for student calligraphy, was held at the Hotel Okura Kobe. The Teikyo University Calligraphy Club, ranked fourth in the university division, was presented with a certificate. The works of our calligraphy club members, Koko Otobuchi (2nd year, Faculty of Liberal Arts), Yuuki Sato (2nd year, Graduate School of Liberal Arts), Yujin Kyoda (2nd year, Graduate School of Liberal Arts), and Rino Hiyoshi (1st year, Faculty Faculty of Liberal Arts), won the highest award, the Grand Prize at the Calligraphy Exhibition. This year, only 56 works were awarded the Grand Prize out of a total of 8,784 entries, making it a highly competitive competition. However, four members, the highest number ever for the Teikyo University Calligraphy Club, won the award. In response to the results, Fukui Atsuya, director of the university's Calligraphy Club, commented, "Regret and hope were all condensed into this one day. After the award ceremony, feelings of regret and hope for next year came to mind. We have to accept the reality that we fell just short of the Outstanding Group Award and third place. However, when I saw the students' beaming faces, my resolve for next year naturally strengthened. It was a moment when I strongly felt that ``we are challengers'' and that we must keep this fact in mind as we take on challenges, and that this is the path that we as the Teikyo University Calligraphy Club must walk. We are determined to do better next year, and I would like to make a new start together with the students."
The team's captain, Mana Kuriyama (3rd year, Faculty of Liberal Arts), commented, "I'm really happy to have been able to represent the team on stage again this year, just like last year. However, something felt different. The view looking down from the stage was the same as last year, but I realized that the difference in just one place - third place last year and fourth place this year - is really quite large. The moment I suddenly realized that next year would be my last, I felt a surge of motivation - "I want to write!" I won't forget the feelings I had at this year's awards ceremony, and I'll do my best next year so that I can stand on that stage again with as many of my teammates as possible."
We appreciate your continued support for the future activities of our university's calligraphy club.
