The Hachioji City Summer Children's Science Class was held at Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus on Monday, July 29, 2024. This was the 27th time the class has been held. It has been held since 1997 at the request of the Hachioji City Board of Education, in collaboration with the Hachioji City Elementary School Science Education Center, with the aim of fostering scientific interest in nature and improving scientific thinking skills among children attending Hachioji City elementary schools.
On the day, 73 students were divided into groups and worked on the theme of "What are genes (DNA), the blueprint of living things?", working with Professor Koichi Makimura, deputy Head of Center of the University's Medical Mycology Research Center, and the instructors in charge. The students carefully collected DNA from the milt of pufferfish, sucked it up with a dropper, and put it in a small vial to take home as the results of their experiment.
During the question and answer session, the students enthusiastically raised their hands, and the supervising professors were seen to provide clear and accurate answers. Our university will continue to provide opportunities to foster an interest in science for many children.
