Teaching practice was held for the Japanese language teacher training course atHachioji Campus

From Wednesday, June 26th to Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024, students participated in a teaching practice for the "Japanese Language Education Practical Approach" class taught by Professor Junko Hino of Faculty of Education Department of Education and Culture, Teikyo University. This class is a required subject in the Japanese language teacher training program, and aims to equip students with the appropriate attitude to provide guidance and support to Japanese language learners. The teaching practice is conducted as part of a required Japanese language course taught by the university's Center for Japanese language Education, and students receive guidance from the Center's faculty and observe classes beforehand before teaching to first- and second-year international students.
Shimojo Yudai (4th year, Faculty of Education), who taught a class on the theme of "Classification" to the first-year Japanese IA class, and his colleagues explained how they devised the class, saying, "When I observed the class, I noticed that many students were very active and spoke up, so I created more opportunities for the international students to speak up and participate actively in the class."
In the second-year Japanese Language IIIA class, Uchibori Rina (4th year, Faculty of Education) and Tanabe Mayuko (4th year, Faculty of Languages and Cultures) taught a lesson on the theme of "rebuttal," in which students were asked to write persuasive essays from two different perspectives: "Are you for or against elementary school students owning smartphones?" The international students worked on their essays using conjunctions. Uchibori and Tanabe talked about the difficulties they faced in the class, saying, "We had to be conscious of using simple vocabulary and speaking in Japanese that would be easy for the international students to understand, and we had to be careful about time management."
At our university's Faculty of Education, it is possible to obtain a Japanese language teaching qualification in parallel with a license to teach elementary school or English. Furthermore, it is rare across the country for a university to have a Japanese language teaching course within a faculty or department that trains teachers, and every year a certain number of students graduate with both qualifications. Uchibori and others are participating in teaching practice in Department of Elementary Education, aiming to become elementary school teachers. They explained their motivation for pursuing a Japanese language teaching qualification, saying, "The number of children with foreign roots is increasing, and there are situations where they are not receiving adequate support, so I wanted to become a teacher with the skills to deal with these children."

Teikyo University will continue to nurture talented people who can play an active role in the international community, such as teachers who can support the learning of children with foreign roots and people involved in Japanese language education overseas.
