Hachioji CampusTeikyo University's Global Mycology Initiative: Bridging Veterinary Expertise from Japan to the Middle East

In a bid to share expertise and foster global collaborations, the Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology recently conducted an animal mycology training course in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The course, running from August 28th to September 1st, targeted veterinarians from the Middle East, offering insights into animal hygiene management within the context of a slaughterhouse. The comprehensive curriculum, crafted by Assistant Professor Alshafni Muhammad Mahdi, included a diverse array of topics crucial for veterinarians working in various fields. Led by a team of experts, including Professor Koichi Makimura, Deputy Head of the Center, Professor Rui Kano, and Yayoi Nishiyama, part-time Senior Assistant Professor, the program covered scientific techniques, sterilization methods, culture medium preparation, classification of fungi, animal mycoses, diagnostic and identification methods for mycoses, fungal staining techniques, and electron microscopy.

The significance of this training extended beyond theoretical knowledge, with participants actively engaging in practical training sessions. The four-day program facilitated meaningful discussions on meat inspection and fungal disease monitoring, providing a valuable platform for knowledge exchange. The training course welcomed four veterinarians who had journeyed from the Middle East to Japan for supervision and inspections, showcasing a commitment to fostering international collaboration in the field of mycology. The course concluded with a certificate of completion awarded by Deputy Head of the Center, Professor Koichi Makimura. Looking ahead, Teikyo University expresses its dedication to developing similar programs, aiming to reach and engage with communities globally that stand to benefit from advancements in mycology. As Teikyo University continues to transcend geographical boundaries, initiatives like these underscore its commitment to making valuable contributions to the global scientific community.
