In a cultural exchange that transcended borders, Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus welcomed the esteemed Kyogen performer, Mr. Ogasawara Yoshio, on October 18, 2023. With approximately 50 participants, including international and Japanese students, as well as faculty members, the workshop delved into the rich tapestry of Japan's traditional performing art, Kyogen. Mr. Ogasawara, a luminary in the world of traditional Japanese performing arts, provided insights into the historical roots of Japanese entertainment. Attendees had the unique opportunity to witness scenes where the human experience is vividly expressed through the use of fans. Beyond a mere observation, participants were actively engaged in exploring the comedic facets of Kyo-gen, attempting to express laughter through their own physicality in a laughter-filled workshop.

As participants embraced the challenge of embodying the essence of humor in Kyogen, laughter echoed through the campus. One international student shared, "During my time studying in Japan, I had always harbored a desire to witness a traditional Japanese performance. This workshop provided a meaningful opportunity to connect with our cultural heritage right here on campus." The workshop not only exposed participants to the imaginative realm of Kyogen but also showcased the richness of Japan's traditional performing arts. Through the expert guidance of Mr. Ogasawara, attendees discovered the depth of expression possible through voice, fans, and movement, fostering a deeper appreciation for the cultural legacy embedded in these age-old traditions. Teikyo University continues to be a bridge between cultures, providing students with invaluable experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
