Kasumigaseki CampusExploring the Terroir Cheese as a Common Asset in Japan and France: A Successful Seminar at Teikyo University

Teikyo University's Kasumigaseki Campus hosted a seminar on "Terroir Cheese as a Common Asset in Japan and France, and Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development" on Tuesday, April 18, 2023. This seminar, commemorating the first anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Global Japanese Studies in the Faculty of Language Studies, was jointly organized by Teikyo University's Okinaga Comprehensive Research Institute and the Department of Global Japanese Studies, with support from Chiyoda Ward. It featured recurrent and reskilling courses for working professionals, as well as open seminars and symposiums in collaboration with various internal and external stakeholders.

Distinguished scholars and experts from both Japan and France were invited to speak at the event. In addition to Associate Professor Mihoko Morisaki from the Department Global Japanese Studies, four experts delivered presentations on their respective fields of expertise. Professor Philippe Janno of Clermont-Ferrand Veterinary and Livestock University and Professor Claire Delfos from Lyon 2 University provided insights into the mechanisms established by AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée) to ensure the continuous production of high-quality Conté cheese. They also discussed the historical context that has led to an increased emphasis on improving and adding value to cheese.

Furthermore, Shiohisa Yamaguchi, who is actively involved in cheese production and competition judging in France, shared his experiences on Abondance cheese production and the current situation of French farmers. Rumiko Homma, the President of Fermier Co., Ltd., presented on the history and current state of cheese consumption culture in Japan. The seminar drew a crowd of 81 attendees, including representatives from private enterprises and the general public, creating an atmosphere of lively engagement. Participants expressed their satisfaction, stating, "Understanding the historical context deepened my interest in cheese, and I found it very educational" and "The seminar packed both academic and practical discussions, making it a highly engaging event." The exchange of ideas continued even after the seminar concluded, highlighting the event's success in fostering active interaction among participants.
