On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, students from Teikyo University Faculty of Law toured Yokohama Prison (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture), accompanied by Makoto Kanazawa from our university's Faculty of Law Department of Law Professor. As part of initiatives to support students' proactive learning, the faculty regularly conducts volunteer prison tours for students in grades 1~4 of Department of Law and Department of Political Science. Yokohama Prison is the only prison in Japan with a noodle factory on its premises, where inmates produce dried noodles. During this visit, we also encountered the characteristics of these facilities and deepened our understanding of the role and operation of penal institutions.
On that day, we received explanations from prison officers about the history of Yokohama Prison, its occupancy rate, and crime trends, as well as learning about the correctional treatment program, which has been introduced in recent years and provides treatment tailored to the characteristics of each inmate. It was a valuable opportunity to gain insights into the realities of a correctional facility that cannot be obtained from textbooks alone, and to deepen our understanding of the efforts in correctional education.
During the Q&A session after the tour, students asked many questions, including "Why do you manufacture pasta and udon noodles?" and questions about the private sector's involvement in the Yokohama Prison's food service, which began this year, such as "the reputation of the actual menu" and "the contract structure between the government and private companies." It was an opportunity for the students to deepen their understanding of and interest in the profession of prison officer.
Our university will continue to promote Practical learning education that fosters problem-solving skills required in the real world, through activities such as facility tours.
