On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at the World Judo Championships held in Baku, Azerbaijan, Akari Omori, a graduate of the Teikyo University Judo Club (graduated from Faculty of Medical Technology in 2025; currently a member of the JR East Women's Judo Club), represented Japan in the women's 57kg class and the mixed team event, winning both titles.
The World Judo Championships are one of the most prestigious international judo tournaments, alongside the Olympics, and feature representatives from around the world. This was Omori's first appearance at the World Championships, and she advanced through the tournament against strong international competitors, becoming the first Japanese to win in her weight class in seven tournaments since 2018. In the mixed team event, she competed in the quarterfinals and finals, earning points in both, and contributed to Japan's eighth victory in two years.
Ms. Omori has been a key member of the judo club since her time at this university, and after graduation, she has continued to improve her skills and achieve success on both domestic and international stages. We look forward to her continued success in the future.
