At the Board of Directors meeting of the Zoological Society of Japan held on June 12, 2026 (Friday), the selection results by the OM Award Selection Committee were announced, and Narumi Shioi, Senior Assistant Professor Faculty of Fukuoka Medical Technology Department of Medical Technology, Teikyo University Fukuoka, was awarded the 2026 Zoological Society of Japan Women Researcher Encouragement OM Award for her research project, "Elucidation of the Molecular Basis of Toxin Production Mechanisms by Comparison of Venomous and Non-Venomous Snakes."
Senior Assistant Professor Shioi has previously focused on the mechanisms by which snakes protect themselves from their own venom, conducting research on self-defense mechanisms. In this research project, she will explore the evolutionary relationship between venom production mechanisms and self-defense mechanisms by comparing venomous and non-venomous snakes.
This research aims to provide an integrated understanding of the molecular evolution of venom production and self-defense, and is expected to deepen our understanding of toxin evolution and the self-defense systems of animals.
Inspired by this award, she is expected to continue her research and educational activities, and to make further contributions to nurturing female researchers and inspiring the next generation of researchers to pursue research.
