From July 6th (Monday) to August 14th (Friday), 2026, Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus hosted the North American University Student Summer Japanese Program, organized by the NPO CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange). Approximately 50 university students, mainly from the United States, participated in the program, learning about Japanese culture, society, and language, as well as deepening their interactions with Teikyo University students at the university's international exchange facility, "OUICHI COMMONS."
On the first day of the program, the orientation included a campus tour led by our university students and a cafeteria experience. In addition, a "scavenger hunt" activity was held where participating students and our university students formed teams to search for and complete designated locations and missions on campus. Despite meeting for the first time, the students quickly bonded through the activity and seemed to become more comfortable with each other. Furthermore, during the program, classes were held in English, covering subjects such as the Japanese economy and basic Japanese, and our university's Japanese students also participated in these classes. Through discussions and group work in the classes, they deepened their learning while being exposed to diverse perspectives and had the opportunity to promote international understanding.
Furthermore, students participated in club activities such as tea ceremony, karate, aikido, kendo, dance, and cheerleading, deepening their interactions with each other while directly experiencing traditional Japanese culture and martial arts. For the participating students, it was an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture, and for the Japanese students, it was a meaningful experience to practically learn about intercultural understanding and international exchange.
Although the program lasted only about a month, it was a valuable opportunity for both the participating students and the Japanese students to gain much learning and make many discoveries. Our university will continue to provide opportunities for students to deepen their international learning and intercultural understanding.
