On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Toyosato Junior High School in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, Aeri Kaneno (Graduate School, second-year student; Graduate School of Economics), a student at Teikyo University, conducted a disaster prevention workshop for 200 third-year students under the guidance of Sutarō Tsuboi of Teikyo University Faculty of Economics Department of Regional Economics Professor.
This lecture was held as part of “Utsunomiya Studies,” a program established within Toyosato Junior High School’s “Comprehensive Learning Period” to foster an attitude among students of proactively addressing challenges and thinking about the future of the communities where they currently live.Ms. Kaneno is currently conducting research on “disaster prevention education” at Graduate School. For this lecture, she created teaching materials and delivered a presentation titled “The Topography of the Toyosato Region and Disaster Prevention,” which focused on the surrounding terrain of the target middle school and lessons learned from past disasters.
During the lecture, she used aerial photographs to explain how the sense of fear varies depending on the type of disaster and how disaster preparedness measures change before and after a disaster. The session also incorporated workshops, such as creating topographic cross-sections. After the lecture, students shared feedback such as, “I used to think Utsunomiya City was safe, but I realized we need to be prepared for an emergency,”“We learned that when a disaster strikes, we junior high school students are not only in a position to be helped, but also need to be in a position to help others.”
We will continue our efforts to contribute to improving local disaster prevention and response capabilities through surveys, research, and hands-on fieldwork.
