A research group led by Haruhiko Hoshino, Senior Assistant Professor Department of Nursing Faculty of Medical Technology, Teikyo University, has shown that providing mental health care to parents of children after intensive care may reduce PTSD and depressive symptoms.
Admission to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) can have long-term effects not only on the mental health of the child receiving treatment but also on the mental health of their parents. In this study, we searched five journal databases and conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of eight studies on the effects of psychosocial interventions on parents of children admitted to the PICU. The results showed that psychosocial interventions such as psychoeducation, counseling, and follow-up may mildly reduce PTSD symptoms and depressive symptoms.
Viewing the recovery of the entire family as an important part of PICU medical care will lead to the establishment of a system that identifies parents who need support early on and provides support without leaving anyone behind.
