The Parki Seminar conducted fieldwork to learn about disaster preparedness and resource recycling practices.Hachioji Campus

On Monday, June 29, 2026, eleven students from the seminar of Associate Professor Akira Parki of the Department of Department of Political Science, Faculty of Faculty of Law Teikyo University, visited Nomi Disaster Prevention Co., Ltd. and Hachioji City Tate Clean Center to conduct fieldwork to learn about disaster preparedness and resource recycling practices.

The Parki Seminar is planning to set up a booth at the university festival (Seisha Festival) again this year, and is working on an initiative to make effective use of disaster relief food supplies that are nearing their expiration date, and to think about food waste reduction and disaster preparedness. This visit was conducted with the aim of re-examining disaster relief food supplies from the perspectives of disaster prevention, food waste reduction, and resource recycling, and to deepen the content that the students themselves will present at the Seisha Festival.

Nomi Disaster Prevention Co., Ltd. is a comprehensive disaster prevention equipment manufacturer that produces fire alarm systems and fire extinguishing systems, and is also involved in businesses related to disaster countermeasures and disaster preparedness. The students received explanations about disaster prevention equipment and disaster relief supplies, and also participated in VR experiences simulating fires, earthquakes, and tsunamis. They also learned that disaster preparedness requires not only purchasing supplies, but also managing and replacing them, and raising awareness on a daily basis.
Next, we visited the Hachioji City Tate Clean Center, a waste treatment facility in Hachioji City, where we received explanations about advanced initiatives based on the Hachioji Circular City Plan, such as charging for waste collection, curbside collection, the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), food waste reduction, and the conversion of incinerated ash into eco-cement. Hachioji City has been ranked first in Japan for the lowest amount of waste generated among cities with a population of over 500,000 for four consecutive years, demonstrating its commitment to realizing a circular society. We learned that waste generated from daily life is being reduced and recycled through the cooperation of citizens, businesses, and the government, as well as through the continuous policies of the local government.

Kenji Nakabayashi (3rd year, Faculty of Law), the public relations and external affairs leader of the Parki Seminar, who spearheaded this visit, said, "Following last year's success, the Parki Seminar plans to set up stalls at the Seisha Festival, offering 'Parki Kitchen: SDGs Bento' and 'Parki Cafe: Sustainable Rusk,' utilizing disaster relief food supplies that are nearing their expiration date. This visit made us realize that utilizing disaster relief food supplies is not only important for disaster prevention, but also for reducing food waste and promoting resource recycling. We also consulted with Nomi Disaster Prevention about support for the Seisha Festival and the seminar exhibition, and it was a great achievement that we were able to deepen our relationship, which will lead to future cooperation. Our stalls at the Seisha Festival may be a small undertaking, but we want to use what we learned from this visit to make concrete preparations."
In Professor Park's seminar, we will continue to promote education that allows students to learn on the ground and consider social issues as their own responsibility, through collaboration with local communities and companies.
