From August 17th (Monday) to September 5th (Saturday), 2026, the student hackathon "Tornado2026," which is co-organized by Okinaga Research Institute of Teikyo University was held. The institute has been continuously sponsoring and co-organizing this event since 2023.
Tornado is a hybrid hackathon where students plan and create products in teams. Students selected through interviews and portfolio reviews are divided into groups, each consisting of one project manager, one UI/UX designer, and four engineers. The teams work together, with each member fulfilling their respective roles, to advance the project.
A kickoff event was held on August 17th (Monday) and 18th (Tuesday), where an intensive ideathon and presentations of each team's plans took place under the product theme of "Create new value that connects the AI era." Furthermore, the teams spent three weeks developing their products based on their plans, and the final presentation was held on September 5th (Saturday) at teamLab Studio (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).
At the final presentation, teams were evaluated based on four criteria: planning ability, design ability, presentation ability, and engineering ability. This time, a total of 12 teams presented from three venues in Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka. In addition to the top prize, excellence awards, and corporate awards from each venue, the three top-winning teams gave pitch presentations, and the top-winning team from the Tokyo venue was awarded the Tornado Grand Prix.
From our university, Sae Hanamura (2nd year, Faculty of Science and Engineering) participated as an engineer, and together with her colleagues, she challenged herself to develop "michinavi," a map application that allows residents to share road traffic conditions during disasters. The experience of working together with members from diverse backgrounds to produce a finished product in a short period of time contributed greatly to the students' growth.
Grand Prize and Seiko Epson Award (double win)
Product name "AKINAVI": A vacant property prevention service that automatically calculates the priority of vacant property countermeasures and reduces administrative costs and the burden on administrative staff by quickly sharing property records and relevant departments.
Excellence Award and TeamLab Award (double award)
Product name "TEAM NAP": An app that intentionally incorporates napping into your schedule as a task to improve productivity, and uses AI to calculate and suggest the optimal napping time.
Teikyo University Award
Product name "TeToTe": A matching service that connects residents with small problems to university students, creating a system for continued community support, and allowing students to use their activity record for self-promotion and as an example of their extracurricular activities.
