Professor Tsuboi of Faculty of Economics conducted aUtsunomiya Campus titled "Easy Science Experience at University (Let's Make a Topographical Model Using Plastic Containers)" at the Teikyo University Museum in Utsunomiya.

On August 15, 2026 (Saturday), Professor Sotaro Tsuboi of the Department of Regional Faculty of Economics, Department of Regional Economics, Teikyo University, gave a lecture for elementary school students at the Teikyo University Museum as part of the Museum Science Lab.

In this workshop, 30 people, including elementary school students in grades 4 through 6 and their guardians, participated in creating a three-dimensional topographic model of the Tama Hills, including Hachioji Campus, using transparent plastic container lids. This topographic model utilizes plastic containers commonly found in supermarkets' prepared food sections, and its key features are that it is safe and easy for anyone to do, by tracing one contour line on each lid from lowest to highest using an oil-based marker and then layering them to recreate the terrain in three dimensions.
Participants shared comments such as, "I was surprised by the significant elevation differences in the Tama Hills," "It was interesting to see the area in three dimensions," and "I learned for the first time that there is a risk of landslides in the Tama Hills." Creating topographic models provided an opportunity for them to learn about the shape of their own area and disaster prevention.
Going forward, we will continue to work on sharing the knowledge and technologies gained from our research at Teikyo University with society.
