On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Teikyo University (Itabashi Campus), students from Faculty of Medical Technology, Department of Sport and Medical Science, and Emergency Medical Technician Course, along with the Security Division of the Itabashi Police Station of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and other police stations, conducted a joint counterterrorism drill. The purpose of this drill was to improve practical response capabilities, establish a coordinated response system with relevant agencies, share crisis management awareness, and strengthen cooperation through initial response procedures for the discovery of suspicious objects on campus and the subduing and apprehension of suspects in the event of incidents such as indiscriminate killings.
On that day, following a threatening phone call threatening to bomb the university grounds, a security guard spotted a suspicious person entering the back of a building. A full range of responses were carried out, from police officers subduing and apprehending the suspicious person, to security dogs searching for explosives, the bomb disposal unit confirming the suspicious object, using disposal robots and X-ray equipment for verification, and finally, placing the object in a portable disposal tube.
Students participated in this training as observers, closely watching the entire process from the initial response by the police to the disposal of explosives. Through the training, the students had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of police response in emergencies and coordination with related organizations. In addition, after the training, in addition to a demonstration by security dogs, faculty and staff from the university and its affiliated School of Medicine learned the basic usage of a sasumata (a type of pole weapon) and key points for dealing with suspicious individuals while ensuring safety, and then conducted actual training in subduing individuals using a sasumata.
This training provided a valuable opportunity for students and faculty to deepen their understanding of the importance of responding to emergencies such as terrorism and crisis management, as well as to reaffirm the collaborative system with relevant organizations. Our university will continue to work in cooperation with relevant organizations to maintain and improve a safe and secure educational and research environment.
