On Thursday, July 16, 2026, as part of the course “Sports Innovation I / Sports Society I” taught by Toshio Kumai at Teikyo University (Faculty of Economics, Department of Business Administration, Associate Professor), Ms. Misao Mochizuki, President and Representative Director of Renaissance Co., Ltd., was invited to deliver a special lecture.
In the first half of the lecture, the trends in the fitness industry and the business of Renaissance Co., Ltd. were introduced. It was explained that the business environment in the fitness industry is changing, with a decrease in large-scale facilities and an increase in small, low-cost, and unmanned facilities. Furthermore, it was explained that under the corporate philosophy of being a "company that creates meaning in life," the company is developing a wide range of businesses centered on "health," including sports club management, corporate health management support, community health promotion, and rehabilitation-focused day services. In addition, the growth strategy utilizing M&A and the concepts of "good deficits" and "bad deficits" were introduced, deepening the students' understanding of corporate management. In the second half, Mr. Mochizuki spoke about his own career. Reflecting on his journey from starting his career on the front lines as an instructor to gaining experience in various departments such as product development and new business development before becoming president, he sent messages to the students such as, "Careers don't always go as planned. That's why you have to take action first to see the way," "You can't understand anything unless you continue for three years," and "It's important to decide for yourself what's important."
Many students who took the course shared their thoughts, such as, "The phrases 'If you act, things will change, and if you act, you will understand' left a strong impression on me. I learned the importance of not being afraid of failure and just taking action," "I learned the importance of thinking about things from a long-term perspective by learning that there are good deficits and bad deficits," and "The phrase 'Careers don't always go as planned' was encouraging for me as I prepare to start job hunting." Moving forward, our university will continue to provide opportunities for Practical learning education as outlined in Educational Guidelines, and support the growth of our students by incorporating the knowledge of those who are active on the front lines of society into their learning.
