Special lecture by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey to Japan held atHachioji Campus

On Friday, July 10, 2026, at Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus, a special lecture was held as part of the "World Affairs (Middle East) I" course taught by Associate Professor Hiroaki Ito of the Department of Department of International Economy Faculty of Economics, Teikyo University. The lecture featured Mr. Ouzhan Ertuğrul, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey to Japan. The lecture was aimed at students of Department of International Economy and focused on the theme of "Turkey's Foreign Policy and Bilateral Relations with Japan."

Mr. Ertuğrul explained the history and culture of the Middle East region, the historical background of the situation in the Middle East, the problems facing the existing international system including the United Nations, the need for a new international order, and Turkey's role within that order. He also described the history of friendly and cooperative relations between Japan and Turkey, starting with the Ertuğrul frigate disaster of 1890, the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1924, and the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024. He also introduced the Japan-Turkey Association, a general incorporated association established in 1926 and celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

During the Q&A session in the latter half of the lecture, students asked questions such as "What are some must-see tourist spots in Turkey?" and "What are some of the international issues from Turkey's perspective?" It was a valuable opportunity for students to hear directly from the Ambassador to Japan and to actively ask questions, making it a meaningful time to deepen their understanding of Japan-Turkey relations and international affairs. Our university will continue to promote educational activities that allow students to deepen their understanding of society and international affairs by providing lectures and opportunities for interaction with experts.
