On Friday, June 26, 2026, at Teikyo University (Hachioji Campus), a guest lecture was held by Mr. Koji Hattori of the First Middle East Division, Middle East and Africa Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Manager), as part of the “International Volunteering and Regional Understanding I” course taught by our university’s Faculty of Languages and Cultures Department of Foreign Languages Professor Kenko Nishimuki.
This lecture was held for third- and fourth-year students in the university’s Department of Foreign Languages program, with the theme “The Situation in the Middle East and Japan’s Diplomacy.”Mr. Hattori provided an overview of the history and culture of the Middle East, as well as the historical background of the region’s current situation, the involvement of the international community, and Japan’s relations with the region. He also touched on issues such as the Palestinian question and the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. At the beginning of the lecture, he spoke about how he came to join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and described his current responsibilities.
During the question-and-answer session in the second half of the class, students asked questions such as, “I’d like to learn more about the current situation regarding the Palestinian issue,” and “Please tell us about the issue of Jerusalem’s status.” It was a valuable opportunity for the students to hear directly from a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official and actively ask questions, and it proved to be a meaningful session that deepened their understanding of the situation in the Middle East and Japan’s foreign policy.
Our university will continue to promote educational activities that allow students to deepen their understanding of society and international affairs by providing opportunities for lectures and exchanges with experts.
