At the 70th All Japan Intercollegiate Karate Championships (Individual Competition), held on June 27th (Sat) and 28th (Sun), 2026 at the Victorina Wink Gymnasium (Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture), the Teikyo University Karate Club won all four events in the men's and women's kumite and kata categories, achieving their second quadruple crown since 2019.
Twenty-eight students from our university participated, and Raiki Funato (3rd year, Faculty of Medical Technology) won the men's kumite, Kanon Irokawa (3rd year, Faculty of Medical Technology) won the women's kumite, Ryo Mizuta (3rd year, Faculty of Education) won the men's kata, and Misa Kobayashi (1st year, Faculty of Medical Technology) won the women's kata, demonstrating their abilities on the national stage.
On the day of the event, the team engaged in fierce battles against strong competitors from all over the country. Despite concerns about an approaching typhoon, team members, alumni, and For parents and guardians traveled all the way to Himeji to cheer on the athletes. Starting with the victory in the women's individual kata, the excitement in the stands grew with each victory, and when the men's individual kumite was decided, the team achieved a quadruple crown, reaching the top of all three events, and the venue erupted in thunderous applause.
Furthermore, in the women's kata competition, our university dominated, securing the top three places, and many of our athletes achieved high rankings. This result once again demonstrates not only the high individual skill level of our university's karate club members, but also the overall strength of the team and the depth of talent within it.
Karate club coach Yasuhisa Inada commented, "Winning four titles in this tournament was achieved through the combined efforts of not only the participating athletes, but also the students and parents who were involved in the support and preparation, as well as the teachers and coaches who provide care on a daily basis. Furthermore, the students who were unable to participate or who had disappointing results showed wonderful support for their teammates. I hope that they will use this experience and their disappointment as motivation, and although not everyone will be able to participate in the team competition in the fall, I expect that they will perform well in their respective roles, led by captains Negishi and Ito."
Going forward, the entire karate club will work together as one towards the Kanto University Karate Championships and the All Japan University Karate Championships to be held in the fall. We would appreciate your continued support.
