On April 25 (Sat.) and 26 (Sun.), 2026, Teikyo University Faculty of Economics Department of Regional Economics Professor conducted "Disaster Drone Pilot Training" (Basic Disaster Prevention and Disaster Response) at the Saga Disaster Support Platform and Training Center (Omachi Town, Kishima County, Saga Prefecture).
This training program began in FY2024 as a private-sector-led disaster response human resource development project subsidized by the Saga Disaster Support Platform, and has so far resulted in the creation of 12 pilots, including this time, who are residents of the town.
On the day of the event, we conducted technical training including aerial photography using drones simulating a disaster area and operation of infrared cameras for search and rescue. In addition, Professor Tsuboi led a training session focused on disaster response, emphasizing disaster law and support structures for disaster victims, as well as an understanding of maps and topography.
In Omachi Town, large-scale flood disasters occurred consecutively in 2019 and 2021, resulting in the isolation of hospital facilities and numerous delays in evacuation. As a result, discussions with stakeholders are underway through this project to establish "sky routes" for drone flight. Moving forward, we will continue to research ways to utilize drones to meet societal needs and work towards implementing drone-based support activities in actual disaster-stricken areas.
