On Sunday, April 19, 2026, a "Driving Experience Tour for the Visually Impaired" was held at the Tochigi Chubu Driving School (Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture), with students from the Department of Orthoptics Faculty of Medical Technology Teikyo University, participating as volunteers.
This experiential tour was jointly planned and implemented by three companies: Japan Care System Co., Ltd., Auto Technique Japan Co., Ltd., and Tochigi Central Driving School Co., Ltd. Auto Technique Japan Co., Ltd. provided students of the department with the opportunity to participate in this volunteer activity as a more practical learning opportunity outside of the classroom.
On that day, we provided assistance to visually impaired individuals driving within the driving school grounds, assisted them with getting to the restroom, and provided meal assistance using the clock position technique.
Students who participated in the volunteer work shared comments such as, "It was a meaningful opportunity that I couldn't experience in university classes," "I was able to build a relationship of trust with the person I accompanied and learned anew the importance of communication," and "I was able to learn about daily life through accompanying someone," making it a valuable experience for them.
Department of Orthoptics will continue to contribute to society through practical activities.
