We implemented the "Sakura Science Program," an international youth science exchange program.

From January 18 (Sun.) to February 7 (Sat.), 2026, Teikyo University School of Medicine Orthopedic Surgery hosted Dr. Maria Albertina Loureyro, an invited researcher from Argentina, as part of the "Sakura Science Program" supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) to conduct research and technology She conducted research and technological development activities.

This program aims to invite outstanding talent from around the world to Japan to experience Japanese science, technology, and culture. Building upon the collaborative research that we have been conducting online with Maria Albertina Loureyro, we have completed research on AI analysis of shoulder joint anatomy using MRI images, and research on XR (Extended Reality) technology and the use of intraoperative radiation. We have also started a new international collaborative research project on the treatment of Achilles tendon rupture, and further developments are expected.
In our technology development activities, we collaborated with companies to create AI training data using MRI images and to develop an analysis workflow. The expertise of Maria Albertina Loureyro, a specialist in biomedical engineering, was utilized, leading to the standardization of the data creation process and strengthening our research foundation.
Furthermore, we have prepared the English narration and educational scripts for the VR simulator for surgical technique training, which is being jointly developed by the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Teikyo University School of Medicine and Alpha Code Co., Ltd. By preparing the English narration and educational scripts, we have made it possible to internationally distribute medical education content originating in Japan, and are contributing to strengthening global collaboration in the field of education.
During Ms. Maria Albertina Loureyro's stay, classroom conferences, case studies, and technical discussions were held, fostering active exchanges of ideas in both research and education. On the final day, she was presented with a certificate of completion, and the promotion of continued international collaborative research and personnel exchanges was confirmed. Through this program, international collaborative research based on online exchanges was further deepened, and new developments in the fields of medical AI and XR education were brought about.

Going forward, Teikyo University will continue to deepen sustainable international collaborative research and personnel exchanges, serving as a bridge for academic exchange between Japan and Argentina.
