On January 30, 2026 (Friday), eight students from Faculty of Law at Teikyo University visited Shizuoka Prison (Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture) under the guidance of Professor Makoto Kanazawa of the Faculty Department of Law and Department of Political Science.
During this visit, we received an explanation from a prison officer about the overview of correctional education and the operation of the facility, and then toured the facility itself. Through the various facilities, including the workshop, cafeteria, grounds, and even a communal room that is no longer in use, we were able to learn about a part of correctional education. In particular, the fact that many private companies have entered the market in recent prison facility management made this visit a stark contrast to the image of a "traditional prison."
During the Q&A session after the tour, students asked many questions, and some, especially those from students who have decided to become prison officers, asked in-depth questions about the realities of the situation. The prison officers answered carefully, incorporating perspectives such as comparisons with other prisons operated by private companies, and provided valuable feedback that will be useful for future tours. We also held an exchange of opinions with a graduate of our university's Faculty of Law who is currently working at the Ministry of Justice.
Through this visit, the students gained practical knowledge about correctional education settings and had a valuable opportunity to further deepen their understanding of and interest in the profession of prison officer.
