We participated in the Tokyo Fire Department's 5th Fire District Rescue and Emergency Training. This emergency training is held annually by the Tokyo Fire Department's 5th Fire District, which has jurisdiction over seven fire stations: Koishikawa, Hongo, Toshima, Ikebukuro, Oji, Akabane, and Takinogawa, with the aim of learning rescue and emergency medical activities in cooperation with related organizations. This time, thanks to the cooperation of various parties, students from the Emergency Medical Technician Course of the Department of Department of Sport and Medical Science Faculty of Medical Technology, participated with the aim of learning how to respond in a real-world situation. Students acting as injured or ill patients and the Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) from the School of Medicine affiliated hospital also participated.
On the day of the training, taking advantage of the campus location, a drill was conducted simulating a disaster during the university festival in which a large number of injured people occurred. Student firefighters worked under the direction of fire department personnel to provide appropriate treatment and transport according to the urgency and severity of the injuries, while students playing the roles of injured people acted out symptoms according to their respective roles to ensure that appropriate triage decisions were made, making the training as realistic as a real situation. After witnessing the training of actual fire department personnel, participating students shared comments such as, "Experiencing the reality of the situation gave me an opportunity to grow as a person," "I gained a deeper understanding by putting into practice what I learned in class, such as the chain of command in triage, the roles of ambulance crews, and how to communicate," and "I became aware of the professional perspective of emergency medical technician and understood the importance of teamwork." In addition, Mr. Tomoyuki Kawamoto, the chief of the Oji Fire Station, presented the student firefighters with a letter of appreciation for their contribution to this training.
Going forward, Teikyo University will continue to contribute to improving regional disaster prevention capabilities, and will use the knowledge and skills gained through practical activities to contribute to the local community and enhance the abilities of its students.
