On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the 28th Chichibunomiya Memorial Sports Medicine and Science Awards Encouragement Award ceremony and celebration were held with the attendance of Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado, and Motoi Kato, Senior Assistant Professor Sports Health Course Faculty of Medical Technology Department of Sport and Medical Science Teikyo University, received the Encouragement Award as a member of the "Marathon Race Safety Measures Group."
This award recognizes the field of sports medicine and science, which is indispensable for the improvement and promotion of sports, and was established with the aim of further developing the sports world in Japan.
This group, led by Dr. Fumihiro Yamasawa, Director of the Marubeni Corporation Tokyo Head Office Clinic and Councilor of the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, has been working on safety measures for marathon races based on research and analysis for over 20 years. As a result of their efforts, they have contributed to a dramatic reduction in fatal accidents at marathon races, and in particular to maintaining zero sudden deaths in cases of cardiac arrest at the Tokyo Marathon, which has led to this award.
Senior Assistant Professor Kato served as the head trainer for the Tokyo Marathon for 10 years, dedicating himself to developing the system for trainers working in marathon events and providing education on the necessary knowledge and skills. Upon receiving the award, Senior Assistant Professor Kato commented, "I am incredibly happy that the activities I have carried out together with many trainers have been recognized by society. I will continue to work on practical application, education, and research so that I can contribute to the safety and security of sports."
